At least 32 dead after earthquake in pakistan

After a strong earthquake in pakistan, the number of dead has risen to at least 32.

30 people were killed in the northeastern district of mirpur in the kashmir region, and two in the eastern province of punjab, local officials said. In addition, at least 478 people were injured, most of them in the district of mirpur. 150 of them were in mortal danger.

On tuesday afternoon, extensive rescue work had begun. Officials in mirpur said they suspected more people trapped in rubble. However, rescue efforts have been hampered by heavy damage to roads and, since wednesday morning, by heavy rains. Rainfall forecast to continue for the next four days.

According to the national disaster management agency, at least 450 homes have been damaged. Destroyed roads should be reopened to light traffic by thursday evening. Images shared on social media showed a road that had broken apart so slowly that entire cars had fallen into the earth’s fissure.

The earthquake shook pakistan in particular, but also left its mark on neighboring afghanistan and india. According to pakistani authorities, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.8. The U.S. Earthquake monitoring system (USGS) put the magnitude at 5.2. Images of massive damage to houses and trees, especially from the region of kashmir, were shared on social media.

The center of the quake was in the city of jhelum near the capital islamabad, according to the pakistan meteorological office. The earthquake also left traces in neighboring afghanistan and india. There were no reports of damage or injuries from these countries.

Earthquakes are common in the region. In october 2015, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake killed more than 400 people. Several thousand people in afghanistan, pakistan and india left homeless.
